Mbabane – The Kia Sonet continues to attract South African motorists as one of the country’s top-selling compact crossovers. Launched locally in 2021 and updated in 2024, the Sonet offers a combination of fuel efficiency, technology features, and solid build quality that appeals to urban drivers navigating rising living costs.

The Sonet is available with two engines and three transmission options. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivers 85 kW and averages 6.2–6.6 L/100 km depending on transmission, while the turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine produces 88 kW and 172 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic claiming 5.8 L/100 km. Drivers seeking stronger acceleration tend to prefer the turbocharged variant.

The 2024 facelift introduced LS manual and automatic entry-level models, moving LX and EX trims to the mid-range segment. Standard features across the lineup include Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth with voice recognition, and a reverse camera, while top-tier SX models gain advanced safety technology such as blind spot warning, lane keep assist, and forward collision alert.

Safety remains a mixed picture. All models are equipped with ABS, electronic stability control, hill start assist, and two front airbags, while higher trims have six airbags. Entry-level models’ low airbag count and the 1.5-litre engine’s reduced power at high altitudes may concern some buyers. Pricing for new Sonets in South Africa ranges from R299 995 for the LS manual to R484 995 for the SX automatic.

The second-hand market offers around 525 units, most featuring the 1.5-litre petrol engine. Vehicles priced between R300 000 and R500 000 dominate listings, with mileage varying from a few kilometres to over 100 000 km.

Industry observers suggest the Sonet 1.5 EX+ as a balanced choice for buyers looking for added features such as six airbags, alloy wheels, and a larger infotainment screen without reaching the flagship SX price point.
