Soweto – Lebohang Maboe has opened up about his recent move back to Kaizer Chiefs, describing it as a privilege to rejoin his boyhood club.
The 30-year-old midfielder signed with Chiefs in August as a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season. He was officially presented to supporters at FNB Stadium during Chiefs’ goalless Premiership draw against Sundowns on 27 August.
Maboe began his career with Chiefs’ development team before moving to Maritzburg United, now Durban City FC, to gain more playing time. Strong performances there earned him a transfer to Sundowns in 2018, where he scored 20 goals and provided 23 assists over 150 appearances. Injuries in recent seasons limited his minutes, and a brief loan spell at SuperSport United ended prematurely when the club’s status was sold to Siwelele FC.
Speaking at a Nedbank-sponsored handover of a multipurpose sports court at Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, Maboe said he was thrilled to be back. “It’s such an honour and privilege to be in such an institute like Kaizer Chiefs. I’m glad that I’m back home. I want to do well with the team and win silverware,” he said.
Chiefs are currently second on the Premiership table with 13 points from five matches, having won four games and drawn one, while keeping five consecutive clean sheets.
