Manzini – Nsingizini Hotspurs booked their place in the 8Bet Trade Fair Cup semi-finals after a 4-1 penalty shootout win over Malanti Chiefs. The match at Mavuso Sports Centre ended goalless after 90 minutes.
The reigning league champions showed their “cup pedigree” by holding their nerve in the shootout. Their composure was key, as they converted all their spot kicks. This victory sends them to their second consecutive semi-final in the tournament. They will now face the winner of the clash between Moneni Pirates and Manzini Sea Birds.
The match itself was a tense, goalless affair with few clear chances. The first half was particularly slow, with both teams playing a cautious game.
Malanti Chiefs had the best opportunities in regulation time. Sifiso Makhubu’s shot was saved onto the crossbar by Nsingizini goalkeeper Felizwe Vilakati. Later, Sandile Mazibuko’s dipping shot was also tipped onto the bar by Vilakati.
Nsingizini had their moments too. Winger Sambulo ‘Masoso’ Simelane forced a good save from Malanti’s goalkeeper, Bongiswa Dlamini. Mozambican striker Nonado Dorfiah thought he had scored for Nsingizini, but his close-range effort was disallowed for offside.
The match marked the debut for former Mbabane Highlanders captain Thabo Langa, who played in defense for Nsingizini.Ultimately, Malanti Chiefs were left heartbroken after their spirited performance, which included knocking out defending champions Young Buffaloes in the previous round.
However, Nsingizini’s perfect record in the penalty shootout secured their passage to the final four, provoking scenes of joy among their traveling supporters.
