JOHANNESBURG – German carmaker Audi has introduced the new A5, a model expected to reshape competition in the premium sedan market dominated for decades by the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The launch comes as Audi phases out the A4 badge for internal combustion engines, reserving it for future electric models. Under the new naming structure, odd-numbered models such as the A3, A5 and A7 will retain petrol and diesel power, while even numbers like the A4, A6 and A8 will move to full electric platforms.

The A5, longer and more powerful than the A4 it replaces, combines the appeal of a sedan with the sleekness of a fastback. Measuring 4 829mm, it is larger than both its German rivals. The car carries Audi Sport-inspired styling, with a wide single-frame grille, sloping roofline and a lift-back tailgate.

Two models are on offer: the 146kW TFSI and the 200kW TFSI Quattro. Both come with the S line package, while a Black Edition option adds black styling details, privacy glass and red brake callipers at an extra cost.

Exterior features include LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, flush door handles and a full-width rear lightbar. Inside, drivers are greeted by the “Digital Stage”, which pairs an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit with a 14.5-inch curved central touchscreen. Sports seats upholstered in leather and synthetic leather, piano black trims and brushed aluminium accents complete the interior.

Standard technology includes adaptive cruise control, three-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, parking assistance and electric tailgate. Buyers can opt for additional features such as a head-up display, panoramic sunroof and premium Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Performance is delivered through a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a seven-speed S tronic transmission. The 146kW version sends power to the front wheels and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds, while the 200kW Quattro model achieves the same sprint in 6.1 seconds with all-wheel drive capability.
