Johannesburg – Volkswagen has officially launched the Tayron in South Africa, positioning it as the brand’s new flagship seven-seater SUV. The Tayron replaces the Tiguan Allspace and is based on the current Tiguan SUV, but stretched to 4.79 metres to accommodate seven passengers. With the discontinuation of the Touareg expected next year, the Tayron takes over as VW’s premium SUV offering in the local market.

The new model is offered exclusively with a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol (TSI) engine producing 110kW and 250Nm, paired with front-wheel drive. Buyers can choose from three trims: Base, Life, and R-Line. Pricing starts at R811,800 for the Base, R853,800 for the Life, and R899,900 for the R-Line, reflecting a premium over the equivalent Tiguan models and previous Tiguan Allspace variants.

The Base model, offered as a five-seater, comes standard with a 12.9-inch infotainment system, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control with Front Assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, parking sensors, Park Assist Plus, and nine airbags. Exterior features include Eco LED headlights and 18-inch Bologna alloy wheels.
The Life trim adds three-zone automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, 10-colour ambient lighting, multi-functional driving experience controls, nine airbags, and illuminated VW badges at the front and rear. The exterior also features LED headlights with automatic main-beam control and 3D LED taillight clusters, giving it a more premium look.

The R-Line is the range-topping variant, equipped with ergo Active seats with heating and massage functions, Varenna leather upholstery, 30-colour ambient lighting, sports-inspired bumpers, aluminium-look trim, and alloy wheels in sizes up to 19 inches. Optional packages include the Black Style package, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon stereo, and high-quality ergo Active seats with ventilation.
Design-wise, the Tayron closely resembles the Tiguan, featuring a horizontal LED daytime running light strip across the headlamps and a horizontal rear light bar. IQ. Light HD Matrix headlights are available as a paid extra, adapting to oncoming traffic to avoid dazzling other drivers.
Volkswagen Tayron buyers in South Africa also receive a three-year/120,000km warranty and a five-year/90,000km service plan, making the SUV a competitive offering for those seeking a premium, seven-seater vehicle with advanced technology and comfort features.
