Pretoria – South Africa’s next Local Government Elections are scheduled to take place between November 2, 2026 and January 31, 2027.
Electoral Commission Chief Officer Sy Mamabolo announced the timeframe during a media briefing at Election House in Centurion on Tuesday. He said consultations between the commission and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs have begun but are not yet complete.
Mamabolo explained that municipal councils serve five-year terms and elections must be held within 90 days after the term ends. The current councils were elected on November 1, 2021, meaning their terms expire on November 2, 2026.
He added that the minister has the authority to set the exact election date after consulting with the commission.
