Bloemfontein- Young Buffaloes secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Kick4Life, with the team’s goalkeeper, Nokwanda ‘Skete’ Mamba, and Player of the Match, Smile ‘Mkatakata’ Marks, crediting the win to teamwork and coaching.
Despite the win, Young Buffaloes CEO Sandile Gwebu expressed that the final score could have been much higher, while the team now awaits further results in the tournament.
The win was a morale-booster for the team, which had previously faced a defeat against Gaborone. CEO Sandile Gwebu clarified the circumstances of that loss, stating that it was a combination of factors, including a grueling travel schedule. He explained that the team arrived late and had to travel all day before their first game, which left them without proper rest.
Goalkeeper Nokwanda ‘Skete’ Mamba was instrumental in the victory, saving multiple shots. “I’m happy we won the game,” she said. “Our coach instructed me to save every goal and I did just that. When I’m able to save goals, I become motivated.”
Smile ‘Mkatakata’ Marks, who was named Player of the Match, echoed Mamba’s sentiments, thanking her coach and teammates. “I played well, it was a lot, there were challenges, but this is the game we wanted,” she said, expressing her surprise at receiving the award. “Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten the title. I would also like to thank my colleagues for being united and displaying what we were taught.”
First goal scorer Nonjabuliso Mokgale shared her excitement, stating she had been eager to score. “I was down but after our first goal, I felt motivated,” she said. She also expressed gratitude to the coaches and promised to deliver two more goals for the team and its supporters as the tournament progresses.
Gwebu concluded by reiterating the team’s focus on the future. “We are happy about the win and now waiting for pending results,” he said, indicating that the team remains focused on its next challenge.
