MBABANE – The Municipal Council of Mbabane has suspended the controversial clamping of vehicles in the city centre, following mounting concerns from motorists and business.
Vehicle clamping was introduced last year to control illegal parking in the city centre and surrounding public areas.
However, according to Council Spokesperson Bongani Dlamini, the decision to stop clamping was made following consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
Dlamini said the council received numerous complaints from motorists and business operators who felt that the practice was negatively impacting them.
He said that instead of clamping, the council was now exploring alternative parking management systems that would be more effective and less disruptive.
“We understand the frustrations of motorists and the business community. The idea is not to punish people but to ensure order and compliance in the city,” Dlamini said.
The spokesperson explained that the council was currently reviewing modern parking solutions such as smart meters, ticketing, and integrated parking tolling. This is because there has been a notable increase in illegal parking, particularly in the central business district.
Dlamini noted that the city continues to grow, and with it, traffic congestion. “As the capital city, Mbabane must provide a system that balances convenience, order, and economic activity,” he added.
