Mbabane: World Health Organization Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti has lauded Africa for strong leadership and implementation of social and public health measures in curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
Speaking during a joint media breaking with WHO and World Economic Forum on Thursday Moeti said Africa has recorded lower cases of COVID-19 than the other parts of the world.
Moeti disclosed that Africa has just 1.5% of the World’s reported cases of COVID-19 and less than 0.1% of the world’s deaths. “However, we cannot let our guards down and we cannot be complacent.” Moeti said.
The Regional Director said African governments have been working day and night, with the support from WHO and partners to contain the spread of the virus. Moeti said May 27 marked exactly three (3) months since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the Sub-Saharan Africa in Nigeria.
According to Moeti, as of May 28 new cases have pushed the overall count up to 124 482 cases with 51 095 recoveries and 3 696 deaths. “Overall we are seeing more people dying in the older age groups, though we also seeing a larger population of cases among those who are young” Moeti said.
Moeti went on to reveal that WHO have trained over 10 000 health workers in Africa as part of the decentralization of the response in areas such as infection prevention and control, case management, logistics and psychological support.
