Matsapha- The Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority (ESWACAA) has raised concern over the growing number of drones being flown across the country without proper authorisation. The authority confirmed that both recreational and commercial operations have increased in recent months, prompting a reminder to the public about legal requirements under the Civil Aviation Act of 2022.
According to ESWACAA, it is illegal to operate or service a drone without the necessary aviation safety instruments. Offenders risk fines of up to E50,000 or a prison term not exceeding five years. Repeat offenders could face penalties of up to E100,000 or imprisonment of up to ten years.
Management of the authority stated that individuals and businesses seeking drone services must first ensure operators are licensed. Drone owners are also required to register their devices with ESWACAA and obtain the relevant permits, including Air Transport Licences for commercial use and approval for recreational activities. Additional clearances from entities such as the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM), local authorities, and traditional structures are also required.
The authority has urged the public to report unsafe drone activity to the Royal Eswatini Police Service and ESWACAA. This includes drones flying over residential, industrial or built-up areas, and those operating dangerously in public spaces.
