ANTANANARIVO – Heads of State and Government from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have reappointed Elias Magosi of Botswana as Executive Secretary for a second four-year term. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit held this week in Madagascar.
Magosi, who first assumed office in 2021, took the oath of office to continue leading the SADC Secretariat, headquartered in Gaborone. His reappointment came with unanimous support from member states, who cited his role in pushing forward the regional integration agenda and improving the institution’s operational efficiency.
Over the past term, Magosi has overseen programmes aimed at fostering socio-economic development, deepening cooperation among member states and guiding SADC through shifting regional and global challenges. His leadership has also been tied to strengthening the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020–2030 and the long-term SADC Vision 2050.
During his acceptance remarks, Magosi thanked the regional leaders for their trust and pledged to maintain focus on priority programmes designed to advance peace, stability and sustainable development across Southern Africa.
The SADC Secretariat serves as the executive arm of the bloc, tasked with coordinating, facilitating and monitoring decisions taken by the 16 member states.
