ANTANANARIVO, MADAGASCAR – His Majesty King Mswati III has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, known as the Troika. The announcement came during the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government today.
The Troika is tasked with promoting peace and security across Southern Africa. His Majesty will serve alongside Chairperson Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi, for the 2025–2026 term and is set to assume the Chairmanship for the 2026–2027 term.
King Mswati III expressed gratitude to fellow SADC leaders for their confidence and pledged to work towards strengthening peace and stability in the region.
Eswatini’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Pholile Shakantu said the appointment offers the Kingdom an opportunity to play a leadership role in addressing regional security and political challenges. She noted that His Majesty’s collaborative approach to dispute resolution will support dialogue among member states and foster cooperation.
The minister added that the position allows Eswatini to tackle issues such as political stability, conflict resolution, and security threats, contributing to holistic peace and development in Southern Africa.
King Mswati III’s election coincides with a return to Madagascar, where he previously served as Chairperson of the Troika from 2010 to 2011. During that term, the organ helped implement a roadmap that resolved the political conflict following the ousting of President Marc Ravalomanana in 2009.
