Anchorage – Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the war in Ukraine will not end unless what he called “fundamental threats” to Russia’s security are resolved. Speaking at a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Putin argued that lasting peace depends on addressing the root causes of the conflict.
“The situation in Ukraine has to do with the fundamental threats to our security,” he said. “To make the settlement lasting and long term, we need to eliminate all the primary roots of the conflict. Legitimate concerns of Russia must be considered, and a fair balance of security in Europe and the world restored.”
Putin added that he agreed with Trump’s position that Ukraine’s security must also be ensured. He expressed hope that agreements reached during their meeting would move both countries closer to that goal.
During the same press conference, Trump described his relationship with Putin as “fantastic,” though hindered in his first term by investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 US election. He said the two leaders made “great progress” in their discussions but stressed that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
Both leaders delivered statements but declined to take questions from reporters, leaving the full details of their talks unclear.
