Anchorage – Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that his next meeting with US President Donald Trump take place in Moscow, following high-stakes talks between the two leaders in Alaska.
Trump reacted cautiously to the idea, admitting it would be controversial but not ruling it out. “That’s an interesting one, I’ll get a little heat on that one. But I could see it possibly happening,” he said.
During their joint press conference, Putin said both leaders agreed Ukraine’s security must be ensured and expressed hope that their discussions would pave the way for peace. He described the talks as “respectful and constructive” and thanked Trump for the invitation to Alaska, noting that despite distance, the two countries remain close neighbours.
Trump said he has always had a “fantastic” relationship with Putin but argued it was hindered during his first term by investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He told reporters the two made “great progress” toward a potential deal but stressed that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
The press conference, opened unusually by Putin instead of Trump, marked the first time in seven years that the Russian leader appeared alongside an American president to take questions. Both leaders left without entertaining queries from journalists.
