Bloemfontein – Orlando Pirates’ winless run in the Betway Premiership continued on Tuesday night after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Marumo Gallants at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
The Soweto giants went into the clash hoping to bounce back from their opening loss to Sekhukhune United, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou making notable adjustments to his starting line-up. Sipho Mbule and Relebohile Mofokeng were dropped to the bench, while Abdoulaye Mariko and Tshepang Moremi earned their first starts.
Pirates started with intent, testing Washington Arubi early through Boitumelo Radiopane, while Oswin Appollis caused trouble on the flank. Their dominance paid off in the 15th minute when Deon Hotto set up Patrick Maswanganyi, who finished from close range.
Gallants struggled to penetrate the Buccaneers’ backline but levelled matters just before halftime. Daniel Msendami pounced on a loose ball to score his first goal of the season, beating Sipho Chaine in goal.
The second half saw Ouaddou bring on Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa in an attempt to break down Gallants’ compact defence. Despite dominating possession, Pirates failed to create clear chances.
Gallants stood firm and struck late in stoppage time when Jaisen Clifford converted at the far post to secure a second consecutive victory for the Limpopo side.
Pirates, still without a league win after two matches, now prepare for Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns.
