MBABANE – The confessions of a couple that was arrested for stealing four two-in-one blankets stunned the Mbabane Magistrates’ courtroom on Monday.
Futhi Nkambule (45) of Mahwalala and Adidas Dlamini (30) of Siphocosini appeared in court charged with housebreaking and theft.
After their arrest at Mahwalala Zone 5, they told the court in their appearance that they were tempted by the devil to steal the blankets.
Court documents reflect that the duo stole four two-in-one blankets worth E2,850 from the home of one Netta Manana.
Self-representing, they pleaded guilty to the charge against them and asked for the court’s leniency.
During mitigation, Nkambule said she was a mother of two young children, a 15-month-old baby who is still breastfeeding and a two-year-old who also needs her care.
She said being away from them would cause serious hardship for them, even before her court appearance, she left them at the gate under care of a good Samaritan.
Her accomplice, Dlamini, also told the court that he was unemployed and lived in a family where everyone survives on small piece jobs.
He said life was difficult. He acknowledged his mistake and said he deeply regretted their actions, stating that it will not happen again.
It was a tense situation at the dock. The pair became emotional and would occasionally be seen wiping away tears as they expressed remorse.
They repeatedly said they would not repeat their actions. They also told the court that they had no previous criminal records.
Nevertheless, the duty magistrates granted them bail fixed at E1,000 each.
The amount is accompanied by strict conditions including that they must not commit a similar offence, must not interfere with witnesses, and must attend all court dates.
