ACCRA – Ghana’s Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has met with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, following tensions sparked by controversial remarks made by a Nigerian community leader based in Accra.
The meeting, held yesterday in the Ghanaian capital, was part of a diplomatic consultation ordered by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Odumegwu-Ojukwu conveyed Nigeria’s official position, distancing the government from the statements that caused uproar across both countries.
The discussions sought to defuse the situation and reaffirm the longstanding diplomatic and cultural ties between the two West African neighbours. Ablakwa described the talks as constructive, adding that both countries remain committed to preserving their shared history and mutual cooperation.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed appreciation for the restraint shown by Ghanaians and the leadership of President John Mahama in the face of the diplomatic tension. She also assured Ghana that the Nigerian government would continue to ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals residing in Nigeria.
