Mzimpofu, Manzini – Construction of a new inclusive boys’ hostel is underway at St. Joseph’s School after Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla officially commissioned the project on Wednesday.
Located in Mzimpofu, the state-of-the-art facility is expected to house 70 boys with disabilities once completed in December 2025. The project is part of efforts to improve infrastructure for learners with special needs.
During a tour of the school, Dladla pointed out the dangerous condition of the existing hostel, which has cracked walls and a collapsing ceiling. She said the situation posed a threat to learners’ safety and warranted urgent intervention. Other structures at the school are expected to undergo renovations in future budget allocations.

The DPM acknowledged the Catholic Church’s long-standing support for children with disabilities, especially at St. Joseph’s where the Church has built a primary school, high school, and a vocational centre. She singled out the late Father Angelo Cicconi for his role in the development of the centre.
The new hostel is being funded by the Republic of China (Taiwan), which has been a major contributor to inclusive education initiatives in the country.
Lungelo Nhlengetfwa from the Ministry of Education said the ministry would continue supporting learners with disabilities through its Special Needs Unit. Catholic Bishop José also welcomed the construction, saying the Church contributes E250,000 annually to keep the centre running, despite limited external support.
