Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates have named Nkosinathi Sibisi as their new captain ahead of the 2025/26 season, which begins this Saturday with an MTN8 quarterfinal fixture against Polokwane City.
The 28-year-old defender takes over the armband from Innocent Maela, who retired at the end of last season after leading the Soweto giants since 2022. Sibisi, known as “Bhodlela” among fans and teammates, was elected through a confidential vote conducted by the squad.
Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi have been appointed as vice-captains.
Sibisi captained the team during much of last season due to injuries and limited appearances from senior players, and his leadership on the field appears to have earned the trust of the locker room.
“It’s a great honour to lead this institution,” Sibisi said after the announcement. “I’ll give everything to represent the badge and the fans.”
Pirates face Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday as they look to start the new season on a strong note.
