A junior police officer stationed at Lobamba Police Station has died after allegedly shooting himself with a service pistol while on duty.
The incident occurred earlier this week inside the station, where the officer was found unresponsive in one of the offices shortly after a gunshot rang out. Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
The officer’s name is being withheld until the family has been notified.
This marks the second reported suicide involving a police officer in a matter of days, following a similar incident at Malkerns Police Station. Both cases have raised fresh concerns over the state of mental health support available to officers within the service.
Normal operations were ongoing at Lobamba station when the shooting occurred. Authorities have yet to comment on the motive or any circumstances leading up to the incident.
