Kigali – President Paul Kagame has urged African youth to harness their talents and believe in their ability to shape the future of the continent.
Speaking at the opening of the Giants of Africa Festival on Sunday, July 27, at BK Arena in Kigali, Kagame told thousands of young people from across the continent that Africa’s progress depends on their determination to act, not just dream.
The week-long festival, which runs until August 2, brought together youth and emerging leaders from 20 African countries, with a vibrant mix of music and cultural performances setting the tone for what organisers described as a celebration of African excellence.

The initiative is spearheaded by Masai Ujiri, the Nigerian-born president of the Toronto Raptors and co-founder of Giants of Africa. Kagame praised Ujiri’s personal investment and commitment, describing the festival as proof of what passion and purpose can achieve.
Ujiri, who was joined by his family and international partners, was recognised for expanding opportunities for African youth through sports and talent development. Giants of Africa has been instrumental in building sports infrastructure and hosting camps to groom young athletes.
This marks the second time Rwanda is hosting the festival, following its first edition in 2023. Kagame said Rwanda was proud to welcome the event again, noting it reflects a growing confidence in Africa’s ability to lead its own narrative.
He challenged the youth to “bring out the giant in you,” calling for hard work both on and off the court.
“Numbers are on our side. The talent is here. The only thing left is action,” Kagame said. “Africa must stop lagging behind and start showing what it’s truly capable of.”
