EZULWINI – The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) Executive Secretary, Mary Baine, has commended Eswatini’s growing tax compliance levels, describing them as a sign of trust between citizens and government.
Baine was speaking last night during the Client Appreciation Day hosted by the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) in Ezulwini. She pointed to the steady rise in compliance rates from 61% to 66.6% as proof that voluntary compliance is gaining ground in the country.
“Voluntary compliance is the heartbeat of a functional state, reflecting trust between citizens and their government,” said Baine.
Baine, who recently took over the ATAF leadership, told attendees she was delighted to share the celebration with taxpayers who contribute to Eswatini’s development.
“I am pleased to be here tonight to celebrate with the architect and his general,” she said, referring to ERS Commissioner General, Dumisani Masilela, and Finance Minister, Neal Rijkenberg. “For us at the African Tax Administration Forum, it is an opportunity to listen and learn from the Kingdom of Eswatini.”
She explained ATAF’s role in supporting tax administrations across Africa to mobilise domestic revenue and acknowledged the importance of compliance in sustaining public services.
Baine said taxpayers should view their contributions not just as a legal duty but as a responsibility to build the nation. She credited the ERS for steering the country towards improved voluntary compliance through client education and digital transformation.
“When ERS pauses to thank you, the clients, it is sending a powerful message that your honesty and your contribution matter,” Baine said.
She also paid tribute to Masilela and the ERS leadership for driving the revenue collection agency forward.
