Johannesburg – South African actor and comedian Oscar Mgudlwa, famously known as Madluphuthu, has reportedly died, according to a statement shared by his son, Asanda Mgudlwa.
The news was confirmed through a Facebook post where his son paid tribute to the entertainer. Mgudlwa, who hailed from Daveyton in Gauteng’s East Rand, made his mark in the local film scene during the early 2000s.
He became a household name through low-budget comedy films such as My Sht Father*, My Lotto Ticket, Madluphuthu 1 and Madluphuthu 2. The films gained massive popularity in many South African townships, especially when DVDs were widely circulated, with prices below R50 making them affordable to most households.
Before turning to acting and comedy, Mgudlwa tried his hand at Kwaito music. He worked with the late Mapaputsi in 2001 and had earlier released an album with Man Child from Mina Nawe in 1998.
His unique brand of comedy, where he portrayed the character of a funny and naïve Madluphuthu, made him one of the most recognisable figures in the township entertainment scene.
