Mbabane – The government has remained tight-lipped after reports surfaced that a United States deportation flight carrying foreign nationals convicted of violent crimes had landed in Eswatini.
According to reports by Reuters, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deportation flight arrived this week with individuals from countries such as Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba, and Yemen. The deportees had been convicted of serious offences, including murder and child rape, and were rejected by their own home countries.
When contacted for comment on the matter, government spokesperson Thabile Mdluli indicated he had no immediate information. “Morning, Khulekile. I am still trying to gather info. Will get back to you as soon as I have something,” Mdluli responded on Wednesday morning.
With no official explanation yet from authorities, questions continue to swirl over the presence of foreign convicts in Eswatini and the country’s involvement in the U.S. deportation arrangement.
