WIMBLEDON — World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka overcame a tough challenge from Germany’s Laura Siegemund to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The match, held on Centre Court, saw Sabalenka struggle early against the experienced 37-year-old, who opened strong with sharp drop shots and smart court coverage. Siegemund took the first set after breaking Sabalenka twice and maintaining composure in key moments.
Sabalenka admitted the start was rough, joking she was ready to “book the tickets” after the first set, as Siegemund’s play unsettled her with a string of unforced errors.
The second set saw Sabalenka regain momentum after Siegemund faltered on a service game, allowing the top seed to level the match. Both players showed signs of nervousness, but Sabalenka steadied herself to take the set 6-2.
In the deciding set, Sabalenka delivered powerful serves and broke Siegemund’s serve twice to pull ahead. Despite moments of brilliance from Siegemund, including a forehand winner break, Sabalenka’s aggressive play and focus helped her close out the match in just under two hours.
With this win, Sabalenka advances to face No. 13 seed Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon semi-finals, marking her 11th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearance.
