JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile has made a rare appearance on a non-traditional media platform, sitting down for an in-depth interview with Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh on the SMWX podcast. The 70-minute conversation aired recently, marking a notable break from the norm, as senior politicians often stick to SABC or other mainstream broadcasters.

Mashatile used the digital platform to address a range of political tensions, including the sacking of Andrew Whitfield, infighting within the Government of National Unity, and Helen Zille’s claims about the potential collapse of the rand. He also responded to criticism around the DA’s positioning in government and opposition.

He recounted details of an overseas trip taken by Whitfield without permission, addressed concerns around accountability standards in the coalition, and spoke on the incident where his convoy came under fire—an event still doubted by some ANC leaders.

Mashatile reflected on his political career, mentioning his contributions to large-scale projects like the Gautrain and Johannesburg’s urban development. He also spoke of new proposals to generate income from idle government assets.

Pressed on allegations relating to luxury properties, business links through relatives, and a Lottery stake involving his sister-in-law, Mashatile denied any wrongdoing and insisted he remained transparent. He also addressed internal ANC power struggles and succession speculation, stating that he has always remained loyal to the party and distancing himself from claims about billionaire Patrice Motsepe’s involvement in ANC matters.

Mashatile’s choice to engage via SMWX signals growing legitimacy for digital political platforms in South Africa, which are attracting large youth audiences. SMWX, which previously hosted high-profile figures like Jacob Zuma and Helen Zille, has become known for hard-hitting political interviews.

In Eswatini, the shift to alternative media is also gaining traction. The What’s the Story Eswatini podcast has quickly risen in popularity, offering a platform for local entertainers and public figures, as regional audiences move towards digital sources for unfiltered content.
