LIVERPOOL – Lamenting scenes as the world wakes up to the heartbreaking news of the death of Diogo Jota. The 28 year old Liverpool forward passed away in a car accident in north western Spain. The young father of 3 also left behind Rute Cardoso, his long term partner who he married less than two weeks ago.
The cause of the accident remains uncertain pending further investigation, which was responsible for taking the life of Diogo and his 26 year old brother, Andre Silva. Reports allegedly claim that the accident took place on Wednesday around midnight, with the driver losing control of the vehicle after its rear tyres were punctured, coming off a road in the province of Zamora. The car, a Lamborghini, burst into flames with firefighters arriving onto the scene to extinguish the blaze caused by the accident. The Liverpool football club said that they were devastated upon hearing of the loss of their forward who joined the club from Wolves in 2020 . He has scored over 60 goals in over 180 appearances in club colours. The Portuguese Prime minister and the country’s football federation paid tribute to their star forward.
Jota has won the Premier League title, the FA cup and League cup with Liverpool, along with being a two-time winner of the Nations cup with Portugal. He was a well respected member of the Liverpool locker room with a warm and friendly personality. The Liverpool Football Club released a statement saying “The Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota”. They went on to request privacy for the Jota family, friends, teammates and club staff during these trying times as they try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.
The Premier League released a statement addressing the loss of Jota “Football has lost a champion who will forever be missed,” the Premier League said in a statement released on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, “Our sincerest condolences go to the Diogo’s Family, friends, Liverpool FC and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time “
Many star footballers also paid tribute to Diogo Jota. The infamous Al-Nassar FC winger and Portuguese National team captain, Christiano Ronaldo was one of the current stars that did just that. Posting on his instagram “It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre’. We will miss you.”
The flag on Liverpool town hall has been lowered to half mast to pay homage to the fallen Liverpool forward and his brother.
