Doha – Iran has agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States following negotiations mediated by Qatar, according to a diplomat familiar with the discussions.
The talks come after Iran launched strikes targeting a US military base in Qatar. A source told CNN that Iranian officials warned the Qatari government ahead of the attack, suggesting the US may have been informed in advance.
US President Donald Trump reportedly asked the Emir of Qatar to intervene and assist in securing a truce. The Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, reached an agreement with Iranian officials on Monday. Trump later announced the ceasefire agreement on social media.
So far, there has been no official confirmation of the deal from either the Iranian or Israeli governments.
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting with his inner security cabinet to discuss the matter. Those present included Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Defense Minister Israel Katz, Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, and other senior figures.
Trump also held direct talks with Netanyahu as part of efforts to reach the agreement. US Vice President JD Vance worked closely with the Qatari Prime Minister’s office on the coordination of the deal.
