MBABANE – What started as a seemingly happy Tuesday afternoon for a 37-year-old Msunduza man who had one-too-many took a turn for the worse when he appeared at the Mbabane-based Eswatini National Court on charges of public indecency after allegedly insulted passersby along Bethusile Street in Mbabane.
Calvin Shongwe spent the night at the Mbabane Police Station where he was held for willy-nilly flooding unpalatable words. When he appeared before Court President Two-minute Shongwe, the accused admitted to having been intoxicated but that was not the charge he faced.
Constable Jerome Ntshalintshali testified that at approximately 5 PM, police officers in uniform observed Calvin walking down Bethusile Street, shouting insults at everyone he encountered.
When officers approached him and warned him against his actions, he reportedly disregarded their presence, continuing his tirade and claiming he had a lawyer.
Constable Ntshalintshali said they then ordered the accused to accompany them to Mbabane City Post where he was formally charged with public indecency.
Court President Shongwe asked the accused to explain his behavior.
The accused said at the time he was intoxicated, stating he had consumed something he had never drunk before.
The court wanted to know what got him intoxicated but he replied, “Banginatsise inkantini lemnyama lengatsi ngumutsi wemkhuhlane (They made me drink a black concoction which looked like a cough syrup).”
The court then sentenced Calvin Shongwe to a fine of E600 and gave him a six month imprisonment option.
