MBABANE – Volkswagen Group South Africa is recalling select Polo and Taigo models sold in 2022 and 2024 due to a defect linked to the front passenger airbag, which could pose a serious risk to occupants in the event of a crash.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed the recall after the German carmaker reported faults in the gas generator of the airbag module. According to the NCC, if the airbag deploys, the faulty gas generator may offer reduced protection or cause the housing to rupture, potentially injuring or killing passengers.
A total of 142 Polo units and eight Taigo vehicles are affected. Of the Polos, 141 were sold nationally from 20 December 2022, while one Polo and eight Taigos entered the market from 29 January 2024.
Volkswagen has advised owners to deactivate the front passenger airbag, avoid using the front seat, and take the vehicle to a VWSA-approved dealership for inspection and possible replacement of the defective parts.
This is not the first recall for Polo models. In mid-May, Polo Sedans sold from 2 April 2025 were also recalled due to a defect in the rear seatbelt latch plates. VW told the commission that these parts may fail to properly secure passengers during an accident or sudden stop. Around 905 vehicles are affected by this separate issue.
Owners of both the airbag- and seatbelt-affected vehicles have been urged to contact Volkswagen dealers to arrange inspections and resolve the safety risks.
