Komatipoort-Lebombo– South Africa and Mozambique have renewed efforts to streamline trade and border security through a three-day bilateral meeting that began on 9 June 2025, focusing on challenges at the Komatipoort-Lebombo and Ressano Garcia ports of entry.
The talks follow a Joint Action Plan signed in November 2023, which both nations say is crucial to managing one of the continent’s busiest commercial crossings. Commissioner and CEO of South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, led the South African delegation at the meeting.
Held as a follow-up to the previous agreement, the gathering brought together steering committees from both governments to fast-track the harmonisation of border management policies. The joint teams are expected to tackle delays in cargo processing and improve safety for truck drivers, who have frequently been exposed to criminal activity due to long wait times at the border.

Dr Masiapato noted that significant improvements have been made at the Lebombo border post, particularly in processing cargo traffic. He revealed that a private partner would soon be announced to help redesign the facility, introducing dedicated freight lanes aimed at creating a “non-stop border post” model.
He described the Lebombo-Ressano Garcia crossing as a strategic point for both countries, citing deep economic ties and shared development goals. According to the commissioner, the crossing is a key gateway for African trade, underscoring the urgency of effective and secure border operations.
The two countries have committed to sharing resources and aligning procedures to boost efficiency and security across their shared border.
