MBABANE – Omoda is preparing to introduce its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the C9 SHS, in South Africa next month, marking a significant step into the hybrid market for the Chinese automaker. The launch will happen alongside Jaecoo’s debut PHEV, the J7 SHS, as both sister brands under Chery accelerate their electrification drive.

The C9 SHS, which received approval for the South African market in February, will feature Chery’s advanced Super Hybrid System (SHS), first revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show in March. The C9 variant brings serious power to the table, delivering 440kW and 915Nm through a combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and three electric motors, supported by a 34.5kWh battery. Power is directed to all four wheels via a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

With a claimed electric-only range of 150 kilometres and a total range of up to 1,100 km when combined with petrol, the C9 SHS could appeal to local motorists looking for efficiency without sacrificing performance. Fast-charging capabilities allow the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in just 25 minutes using a 40kW DC charger.

The model will be sold exclusively in the high-end “Explore” trim, which includes premium features such as 20-inch alloy wheels, a Sony 12-speaker audio system, Nappa leather seats with heating and ventilation, a panoramic sunroof, dual 12.3-inch digital displays, ambient lighting, and wireless charging pads.

Safety tech will also be a major draw, with systems including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and a 540-degree surround-view camera setup expected as standard.

Local dealers are watching closely to see how Omoda’s premium plug-in will compete in a growing hybrid market. Pricing is expected to be announced in the coming week, and speculation suggests it could cross the R1 million mark — a first for the Omoda brand in South Africa.
