MBABANE – As more urban dwellers in Eswatini seek natural ways to improve their indoor environments, house plants are fast becoming the go-to solution for healthier, more inviting homes. Whether tucked into bedrooms, perched on porches or brightening up kitchens, certain plants are not just ornamental—they serve practical purposes too.

Monstera, often called the Swiss cheese plant for its distinctive, hole-filled leaves, is gaining popularity across households in Mbabane and beyond. These plants thrive in filtered sunlight and prefer moderate watering, making them suitable for bedrooms, lounges or verandas. Besides their bold look, they contribute to better indoor air quality.

Another favourite is the Snake Plant, which has become a common sight in many local homes and offices. Known for being hardy and low-maintenance, snake plants are ideal for entryways, bedrooms, or workspaces. Their upright leaves require minimal care—just occasional watering and a spot away from direct sunlight. Many plant lovers say they help promote calm and cleaner air.

Boston Ferns have made a comeback in many homes, especially among those with shaded patios or humid interiors. These ferns flourish in consistently moist soil and indirect sunlight, and are praised for their cascading fronds that add softness to any room.

The Peace Lily remains a favourite for those who want a bit of bloom alongside green foliage. These plants are best kept in spaces that receive indirect light and consistent moisture. Many homeowners prefer placing them away from open windows or cold drafts, where their white flowers and lush leaves can flourish.

Lastly, Pothos—commonly found creeping along kitchen shelves in Ezulwini and surrounding areas—require little effort. They can handle lower light but do best with occasional watering and room temperatures around 15 to 27°C. Some local plant enthusiasts enjoy training them to climb or hang in cascading pots, creating a living décor effect.

For residents looking to create a more natural, cleaner and relaxing home environment, these five house plants offer simple yet effective options.
