BLOEMFONTEIN – South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken his legal battle to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in an effort to overturn a Pretoria High Court ruling that declared his recognition of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as unlawful.
The president’s legal team is set to argue before the SCA on Wednesday in defence of his decision to officially recognise Misuzulu as the Zulu monarch—a move that came just days after the king’s traditional coronation at KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in Nongoma.
However, the recognition sparked legal action from King Misuzulu’s elder brother, Prince Simakade Zulu, who claimed the identification process was flawed and in breach of customary protocols. The Pretoria court agreed with the prince, ordering that the president establish a panel to investigate the nomination.
Ramaphosa is now appealing that ruling, maintaining that his recognition followed due constitutional and traditional process.
Zulu regiments, traditional leaders, and members of the royal household are expected to be present at the court during the hearing.
