Gaborone — The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has dismissed reports accusing it of abandoning its soldiers stationed in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The controversy erupted after a News24 article on 18 May alleged that transport for South African troops, including promised buses, was not provided.
SADC clarified that these accusations are false and do not mirror the reality on the ground. The regional bloc confirmed that troop deployment and the phased withdrawal under the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) are being carried out according to the agreed withdrawal plan.
The SAMIDRC Force Commander is managing the process to ensure the safe and orderly exit of troops, fully adhering to SADC protocols and international guidelines.
SADC reaffirmed its dedication to peace and stability in the region, supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in eastern DRC. The organisation also called on media outlets to verify facts before publishing reports that could undermine regional peace initiatives.
