LOZITHA PALACE — His Majesty King Mswati III today received letters of credence from the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Eswatini, H.E. Colin Wells, and the European Union Ambassador, H.E. Karsten Mecklenburg, during a formal ceremony held at Lozitha Palace.
During the engagement, King Mswati III reaffirmed Eswatini’s dedication to fostering its longstanding diplomatic ties with both the UK and the EU. He expressed appreciation for the continued support offered by the two entities, particularly in areas of development, education, and governance. The monarch also spoke about the value of open dialogue in resolving global and regional challenges.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Colin Wells reflected on the historic and enduring connection between the United Kingdom and Eswatini, which dates back to before the country’s independence in 1968.
“The relationship between Eswatini and the UK did not end with independence under His Majesty King Sobhuza II,” said Wells. “It matured into one between two equal nations, bonded by shared principles, values, and the importance of family and community.”
Wells further noted the educational exchange between the two countries, citing the Chevening Scholarship Scheme, which funds master’s degrees in the UK for outstanding emaSwati students.
“Your Majesty is yourself a product of the UK education system,” he added, recalling their shared time in south-west England during their school years, attending institutions located only miles apart.
On his part, H.E. Karsten Mecklenburg highlighted the EU’s ongoing developmental partnership with Eswatini, which he described as deep-rooted and progressive.
“For over 50 years, the EU and Eswatini have worked together to tackle key development priorities,” said Mecklenburg. “Our investments in free primary education, agriculture, infrastructure, social protection, and green energy reflect our enduring commitment to Eswatini’s growth and prosperity.”
