The Government of Eswatini has issued a strong advisory urging all citizens traveling abroad to secure comprehensive travel insurance before departure. The advisory, released through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, applies to emaSwati traveling for business, study, leisure, or relocation.
According to the statement, travel insurance is essential for financial and medical protection while overseas. It covers medical emergencies, hospitalizations, and emergency medical evacuations, ensuring that travelers are not left facing overwhelming expenses in the event of illness or injury. Additionally, insurance policies provide compensation for lost or stolen belongings, trip cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances, and the repatriation of remains in case of death.
The government warns that many travelers who allow their insurance to lapse find themselves in difficult financial and logistical situations when emergencies arise. Citizens currently abroad are advised to regularly check their policy expiry dates, renew lapsed coverage immediately, and ensure their policy includes their current location and duration of stay. Those extending their time abroad must upgrade their insurance accordingly.
Authorities have also clarified that due to financial constraints, the government cannot guarantee financial assistance to citizens facing crises overseas. It is the responsibility of travelers to secure and maintain adequate insurance to protect themselves.
Additionally, the advisory encourages emaSwati to stay informed about health risks in their host countries, follow local health advisories, and seek medical attention when necessary.
Parents, students, business travelers, and all emaSwati abroad are urged to take the advisory seriously. Any expired insurance must be renewed immediately to avoid complications in times of emergency.
