Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini represented Eswatini at a virtual Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government on 13th March 2025, where the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was discussed. Despite calls from both regional and international leaders for a ceasefire, violence in the region continues to intensify.
Eswatini, along with other SADC member states, called for a coordinated and phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops currently stationed in the DRC. The approach seeks to ensure the safety of troops while preventing a power vacuum that could be exploited by armed groups. The Prime Minister also brought attention to the grave humanitarian crisis that has emerged as a result of the ongoing conflict.
On behalf of the nation, Prime Minister Dlamini extended condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the conflict, including the brave SAMIDRC personnel who have shown resilience in the face of tremendous challenges.
The summit concluded with a resolution to bring an end to SAMIDRC’s mandate and initiate the phased withdrawal of its forces from the DRC. Additionally, the summit reaffirmed its commitment to finding a political and diplomatic resolution, involving both state and non-state actors, to restore peace and stability to the eastern DRC.
The leaders also stressed the importance of civilian protection and the need to ensure their free movement to safety. They urged all parties involved to respect international humanitarian laws, cease attacks on civilian infrastructure, and allow unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance.
