Mbabane – The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) in partnership with the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, will be disbursing 800 phones to people living with disabilities so that they can use the gadgets to access their grants.

ESCCOM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mvilawemphi Dlamini relayed the initiative during a hand over of the gadgets to DPM Themba Masuku, who was represented by the office’s Principal Secretary Makhosini Mndawe.

Dlamini said they were proud to be part of the initiative that seeks to promote the use of technology among the people that the DPM’s office works with.

“We appreciate that the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini, through the DPM’s office, is availing grants both to the elderly and people living with disabilities. It is our pleasure to be part of this initiative which would see the grants beneficiaries own these gadgets which will help them access their grants without having to rely on a second or third party because they are sometimes taken advantage of and some of them are robbed their grants,” he said.

Dlamini implored the Government to continue offering the grants to the beneficiaries.

Masuku, who was represented by Mndawe, said the government of Eswatini in its eendeavour to create social protection programmes and social assistance to this group has put in place a disability grant which is accessible to a proportion of this population.

He said the census clearly shows the prevalence of the different disabilities Emaswati face and as such more support needs to be extended. Currently our government faces a lot and thus prioritizing is key with the limited resources currently available.

“Given the prevailing circumstances as the government continues to disburse the disability grant, it has come to the attention of the office that the majority of the PWD population are exposed to exploitation and abuse due to limited access to mobile gadgets that they can use to easily access their quarterly grants from government”,  he said.
