Two kingdoms hold second Umhlanga edition same weekend
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mbabane – Eswatini and the Zulu Kingdom are hosting the second editions of their Umhlanga ceremonies on the same weekend, again highlighting the deep cultural and royal ties shared by the two kingdoms.

The second edition of Eswatini’s Umhlanga ceremony starts today and ends on Sunday at the Mbangweni Royal Residence in the Shiselweni Region, while the AmaZulu Kingdom is also holding the second leg of its uMkhosi woMhlanga ceremony over the same period at the eMashobeni Royal Palace in uPhongolo, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Both ceremonies are being held from Friday, September 11, to Sunday, September 13, with thousands of maidens expected to take part in traditional activities, including the cutting and presentation of reeds, singing and dancing.

In Eswatini, the second edition follows the main national Umhlanga ceremony held at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence from August 25 to September 1. The Main Day celebration took place on August 31 before Their Majesties.

The second ceremony is being hosted at Mbangweni Royal Residence in Shiselweni, where maidens arrived and registered today before taking part in the reed-cutting activities and traditional celebrations over the weekend.

Meanwhile, AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is hosting the second leg of the Zulu Reed Dance at eMashobeni Royal Palace in uPhongolo.

The Zulu ceremony also began with the arrival and registration of maidens today, while the main public celebrations and traditional dancing are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The simultaneous hosting of the second editions carries particular significance because King Misuzulu is the biological nephew of His Majesty King Mswati III.

King Misuzulu’s late mother, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, was an Eswatini princess, daughter of the late King Sobhuza II and sister to King Mswati III.

The royal blood ties have for decades been accompanied by strong cultural links, with both kingdoms preserving similar traditions through ceremonies such as Umhlanga and Incwala.

The Zulu Reed Dance also carries a strong Eswatini connection through Queen Mantfombi, whose upbringing and royal roots in Eswatini formed part of the cultural relationship between the two kingdoms.

This year’s second Zulu ceremony is being held at eMashobeni, a venue associated with the historical roots of Queen Nandi, the mother of King Shaka.

The main second-leg celebrations had historically been held at the eNyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, making the hosting at eMashobeni a significant development for this year’s ceremony.

As maidens gather at the two royal residences this weekend, Eswatini and the Zulu Kingdom will once again celebrate a shared cultural tradition while underscoring the royal relationship that continues to bind the two kingdoms.
