MBABANE – Eswatini’s growing influence on the regional electronic music scene continues to gain momentum as veteran house music DJ and producer DJ Mixmash prepares to headline an exclusive after-work deep house session in Maputo, Mozambique, this Friday.
The performance, scheduled for July 10 at The Backroom in Maputo, marks another international booking for the seasoned entertainer, reinforcing the increasing demand for Eswatini’s house music talent beyond the country’s borders.
Fresh from an international performance in Zanzibar, the celebrated DJ, born Sicelo Mashwama, believes the Mozambique booking is more than just another gig, it is part of a broader mission to strengthen musical ties within Southern Africa while showcasing Eswatini’s creative excellence.
“I’m incredibly honoured to have been invited to perform at The Backroom in Maputo, one of Mozambique’s respected live music and lifestyle venues. This booking means a great deal to me because it’s not just another performance; it’s an opportunity to represent Eswatini’s music industry beyond our borders and continue building meaningful collaborations within the Southern African region,” he said.
Although he previously performed in Mozambique more than a decade ago, DJ Mixmash described this return as a defining moment in his artistic journey.
“This invitation feels like a new chapter in my career. The music industry has evolved tremendously since then, and so has my own journey as a DJ. I’m approaching this performance with renewed experience, a broader musical perspective and a vision of creating stronger musical exchange between Eswatini and Mozambique,” he added.
Music lovers attending the event can expect an immersive deep house experience, with DJ Mixmash promising a carefully crafted set that reflects his signature soulful sound.
“Fans can expect a blissful musical journey. Beyond the music, I hope this performance becomes the beginning of more collaborations between artists, promoters and music lovers across the region. I’m intentionally working towards taking the DJ Mixmash brand to more international stages, and I hope this is another important step in that journey.”
A career spanning over a decade, DJ Mixmash remains one of Eswatini’s most influential house music pioneers. After first making his mark as part of Swazi Pride, he successfully transitioned into a solo career, releasing his debut album Tru Soundz Vol. 1 in 2010, which featured the popular single Vuzavuza.
His latest international booking also comes at a time when Eswatini’s electronic music scene is receiving growing regional recognition, with artists such as DJ Cup and Tribal Natives also securing performances on major stages across Southern Africa.
As the Kingdom’s house music exports continue to expand, DJ Mixmash’s return to Maputo is expected to further cement Eswatini’s reputation as a rising force in the region’s electronic music landscape.
