MBABANE- The Kingdom’s dramatic arts scene is poised for a landmark moment as the October International Theatre Festival (OITF) announces its inaugural edition, set for October 1–3, 2026, in Mbabane.
The three-day festival will be anchored at the historic Eswatini Theatre Club, a longstanding pillar of creative expression in the capital. The venue will serve as the main stage for an eclectic programme of performances, ranging from raw and experimental community theatre to polished mainstream productions.
At the heart of the 2026 edition is the innovative Zambezi Cross concept, a regional collaboration designed to strengthen artistic exchange within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The initiative will bring together theatre-makers and productions from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa and Eswatini. By extending the lifespan of theatrical works across borders, Zambezi Cross seeks to cultivate a shared Southern African identity rooted in storytelling and performance.
Festival Curator Larry Mhlanga said the vision behind OITF was inspired by the need to bridge local creativity with global narratives.
“OITF was born out of the necessity to bridge the gap between local talent and global storytelling,” he said. “By hosting this at the Eswatini Theatre Club, we are not just putting on an event; we are revitalizing a cultural landmark and ensuring that the passion for the stage is nurtured and sustained for the next generation. We are excited to bring the diversity of the Zambezi Cross network to the heart of Mbabane.”
Beyond performances, OITF 2026 aims to offer a holistic and immersive experience. Organisers have promised a dynamic mix of stage productions, street activations and professional masterclasses that blend performance with pedagogy. The mission is to provide an inclusive, world-class platform that celebrates African storytelling excellence while creating opportunities for professional growth and international exposure for local artists.
As anticipation builds, the full programme will be unveiled in the coming weeks. For now, theatre enthusiasts, artists and cultural stakeholders are encouraged to mark their calendars for what promises to be a defining chapter in Eswatini’s creative calendar.
