Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Pholile Shakantu has reiterated the Kingdom of Eswatini’s solidarity with the people of Sudan and Somalia during the 1330th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.
Addressing the high level meeting of the continental body, Shakantu conveyed Eswatini’s continued commitment to collective African initiatives aimed at promoting peace, security and stability across the continent.
The meeting, held under the framework of the African Union Peace and Security Council, focused on strengthening support mechanisms for African led peace operations and improving coordination with the United Nations.
In her remarks, Shakantu referred to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719, describing it as significant for the continent’s peace architecture.
“2719 of is of particular relevance. The resolution responds to long-standing calls by the African Union for predictable, sustainable, and adequate financing for African Union led peace support operations.
Its effective, timely, and principled operationalization will significantly enhance the capacity of the Peace and Security Council. to implement its mandates and decisions, strengthen African owned and improve the effectiveness of peace operations in support of silencing the guns.”
She said the Kingdom supports structured collaboration between the African Union and the United Nations to ensure improved delivery on peace mandates.
“The Kingdom of Swaziland therefore encourages continued and structured engagement between the African Union and the United Nations anchored in coherence, complementarity, and shared responsibility in support of PSC’s mandate efforts to promote peace and stability across the continent.”
Shakantu also informed the Council that Eswatini is preparing to assume the chairmanship of the Peace and Security Council for the month of March. She said the country intends to work closely with member states and the African Union Commission to advance dialogue and preventive diplomacy.
“As the Kingdom of Eswatini prepares to assume chairmanship for the month of of March, we look forward to working with all member states and the commission to ensure a a prevention-driven responsive council that in line with its mandate and promotes dialogue. Thank you.”
