Kariega – Volkswagen South Africa is preparing to roll out a limited-run Polo GTI Edition 20 before the end of March as part of its milestone celebrations at its Kariega plant.
The commemorative model comes as the manufacturer marks 75 years since the first vehicle rolled off the assembly line in Kariega, 30 years of Polo production at the facility and 20 years since the introduction of the first Polo GTI in South Africa.
To celebrate two decades of the performance hatchback in Mzansi, VW is introducing the special Edition 20, which features 18 inch Faro alloy wheels, a black roof and mirror housings as well as 20 Edition decals. The model will also be available in Crystal Ice Blue paintwork.
While the exterior receives distinctive styling updates, the powertrain remains unchanged. The limited run Polo GTI is powered by a 2.0 litre TSI turbo petrol engine delivering 147kW and 320Nm to the front wheels through a six speed DSG transmission.
The Polo nameplate was first introduced to South Africa in 1996 with the four door Classic sedan, positioned between the Citi Golf and the Jetta and Golf ranges. Two years later, the Polo Playa hatchback joined the line up.
Following the arrival of the fourth generation model, the first Polo GTI was launched locally in 2006. By the end of 2025, more than two million Polos had been produced at the Kariega plant, with the majority exported to 38 countries.
The facility currently builds the sixth generation Polo alongside the Polo Vivo, which is based on the fifth generation model. Production will expand further next year with the addition of the Tengo crossover SUV to the assembly line.
