Addis Ababa – The African Union Commission has welcomed the outcome of Uganda’s presidential election and extended congratulations to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni following his re election with 71.61 percent of the votes cast.
The election was held on 15 January 2026 across Uganda, drawing attention from governments and institutions across the continent, including the Kingdom of Eswatini, where the vote is being followed as part of broader regional developments in democratic governance.
In a statement issued from Addis Ababa on Saturday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the electoral process as orderly and acknowledged the work of regional observers deployed to monitor the polls.
The Chairperson also conveyed appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for leading the Joint African Union COMESA and IGAD Election Observation Mission, which was tasked with assessing the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
According to the Commission, the mission’s leadership played a central role in coordinating observers from across Africa and providing an independent assessment of the conduct of the elections.
The African Union further noted that the Ugandan elections form part of ongoing efforts on the continent to strengthen democratic institutions, promote political stability and support long term development.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting member states in advancing democracy and effective governance, while acknowledging the participation of Ugandan citizens in the electoral process.
