Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers scored twice to guide his team to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday, moving Unai Emery’s side to within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Rogers opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a stunning strike and doubled Villa’s advantage 12 minutes into the second half. Manchester United had briefly equalised in first-half stoppage time when Matheus Cunha capitalised on a Matty Cash error. Despite creating several chances without Bruno Fernandes, who left injured at halftime, United could not find a way back.
The win keeps Villa third in the league, just one point behind Manchester City, while Manchester United sit seventh as Christmas approaches.
Villa have now won their last 10 home matches in all competitions, matching a previous run under Emery from March to September 2023. Emery is only the second Villa head coach to record two separate sequences of 10 consecutive victories, following George Ramsay, who achieved five such runs between 1888 and 1905.
In the Premier League this year, only Manchester City (49 points) have collected more home points than Villa (43), with Emery’s team losing just one home game, the fewest among ever-present sides. The victory over Manchester United marked Villa’s second win against the Red Devils at Villa Park in 27 Premier League home games, the previous success being a 3-1 win in November 2022.
