Berlin – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed confidence that Berlin and London are moving towards closer ties after the challenges posed by Brexit. Speaking before his state visit to the United Kingdom, Steinmeier acknowledged that the first few years following Brexit had been difficult but noted that both nations had adapted and were now focused on improving their relationship.

Steinmeier described King Charles III’s state visit to Germany in March 2023 as a significant step in reaffirming the importance of German-British relations. He stressed that the visit underscored the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries, a sentiment shared by both nations.

The three-day state visit is historic, marking the first time in 27 years that a German head of state has visited the UK. Steinmeier, along with his wife Elke Büdenbender, was welcomed with a ceremonial carriage ride and military honours at Windsor Castle.

The German President is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street to discuss political, economic, and cultural ties, with an emphasis on fostering better connections between the people of both countries.

As part of the visit’s symbolic gesture of reconciliation, Steinmeier will lay a wreath at the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, a site heavily damaged by German bombers during World War II.
