Musina – The death toll from a devastating bus crash along the N1 near Musina in South Africa has climbed to 42, according to the Limpopo provincial government. Among the victims was a 10-month-old baby.
The crash occurred on Sunday evening when a long-distance bus travelling from Gqeberha to Harare, Zimbabwe, and Malawi plunged down an embankment while negotiating a steep mountain pass. The N1 highway was closed for several hours as rescue teams worked through the wreckage.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba visited the crash site on Monday morning, where a multi-disciplinary response team had been deployed. She described the tragedy as “painful beyond words” and extended condolences to the affected families in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the survivors and the families who have lost loved ones,” Ramathuba said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa also conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families. The Limpopo government confirmed that it was working with Zimbabwean and Malawian consular officials to support survivors and assist in the repatriation of bodies.
Disaster management and health teams have been dispatched to nearby hospitals, while psychosocial support is being provided to those who survived the crash.
