Tata has confirmed its return to the South African market with the launch of the Harrier, a diesel-only SUV built on the same foundation as the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.
The Harrier, first introduced in India in 2018 and refreshed two years ago, now arrives in Southern Africa as Tata’s flagship model. It is built on the Omega Arc platform, a development of Jaguar Land Rover’s D8 architecture. The five-seater SUV measures 4.6 metres in length with a wheelbase of 2.7 metres and boot space ranging from 445 litres to 815 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Power comes from a 2.0-litre Kryotec turbodiesel engine, derived from Fiat’s Multijet unit. The motor produces 125kW and 350Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to the front wheels only. Claimed fuel economy is 6.6 litres per 100 km.

Buyers can choose from three grades, Pure Plus, Adventure Plus and Fearless Plus. All versions feature a drive mode selector with Eco, City and Sport settings, as well as a terrain selector for Normal, Rough and Wet conditions. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning with rear vents, dual 10.25-inch screens, keyless entry, six airbags, rear parking sensors, cruise control and a reverse camera.
The Adventure Plus trim upgrades to imitation leather seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, mood lighting, wireless charging and advanced driver assistance systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning.
At the top of the range, the Fearless Plus offers a nine-speaker JBL sound system, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, ventilated electric seats, an electric tailgate and seven airbags.

Customers can choose from five colours including Ash Grey, Lunar White, Pebble Grey, Coral Red and Seawood Green, though the last is reserved for the Adventure Plus and Fearless Plus trims.
The Harrier comes with a five-year or 125 000 km warranty and a five-year or 75 000 km service plan. Prices start at R549 900 (about E549 000) for the Pure Plus, R649 900 for the Adventure Plus and R699 900 for the Fearless Plus.
