Mbabane – Supposedly the first task of the newly appointed Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) Board is to seek and find a new Managing Director (MD) pronto, following the departure of Thokozani Khumalo, whose contract has expired.
Shortly after Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, Savannah Maziya, unveiled the Kwanele Magagula-led board, Maziya requested members of the media to excuse the board so that it could begin discussions on pressing issues, including appointing the acting managing director of the state-owned enterprise.
The acting MD, according to Maziya, will be announced soon after the board has reached a unanimous decision.
Khumalo, who assumed office in August 2021, leaves the position after steering the corporation through a turbulent period. In an interview with one of the local publications, he recalled inheriting an organisation at a crossroads, plagued by network interruptions, unstable services, rampant copper theft, negative publicity, demoralised staff and declining revenues.
He said the company’s operations were close to collapsing when he took over. His immediate focus was on stabilising services, tightening internal controls and addressing governance failures.
Reflecting on his tenure, Khumalo said he was proud to leave behind an organisation on the road to recovery, with restored stability, improved controls and renewed discipline across the corporation. However, he acknowledged that resistance from individuals who had benefitted from the earlier state of disorder remained a challenge.
